Water
Whether it’s drought in Africa, or contamination in Palestine, or simply lack of clean water sources in Bangladesh, this is an increasing problem for millions around the world.

Some facts about water:
Diarrhoea
1.8 million people die every year from diarrhoeal diseases (including cholera); 90% are children under 5, mostly in developing countries.
88% of diarrhoeal disease is attributed to unsafe water supply, inadequate sanitation and hygiene. Improved water supply reduces diarrhoea morbidity by between 6% to 25%, if severe outcomes are included.
Improvements in drinking-water quality through household water treatment, such as chlorination at point of use, can lead to a reduction of diarrhoea episodes by betweem 35% and 39%.

Malaria
1.3 million people die of malaria each year, 90% of whom are children under 5.
There are 396 million episodes of malaria every year, most of the disease burden is in Africa.

Arsenic
In Bangladesh, between 28 and 35 million people consume drinking-water with elevated levels of arsenic. The number of cases of skin lesions related to drinking-water in Bangladesh is estimated at 1.5 million.
Arsenic contamination of ground water has been found in many countries, including Argentina, Bangladesh, Chile, China, India, Mexico, Thailand and the United States. The key to prevention is reducing consumption of drinking-water with elevated levels of arsenic, by identifying alternative low arsenic water sources or by using arsenic removal systems.

Access to water supply as of 2002
In 2002, 1.1 billion people lacked access to improved water sources, which represented 17% of the global population. Of the 1.1 billion without improved water sources, nearly two thirds live in Asia.

Other
Africa accounts for 97% of the world's burden of onchorocerciasis (a parasitic infection), 88% of the world's burden of malaria, 78% of its schistosomiasis burden, and 52% of its trachoma burden. Schistosomiasis (bilharziasis) - More than 200 million people worldwide are infected by schistosomiasis. - 88 million children under fifteen years are infected each year with schistosomes.
In Bangladesh alone, more than 4 million tube wells have been installed over the past twenty years to provide safe drinking water to 95% of the population.
South-East Asia accounts for 62% of the world's burden of dengue, and 56% of its burden of lymphatic filariasis.
Palestinians receive only 33-40% of average water requirements advised by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
An alarming 90% of water supplied to Gazans, of whom over 70% are registered refugees, does not meet drinking water standards.Source: World health Organisation

Your money will be used to provide water sources and clean water for people in some of the poorest and most neglected parts of world.

We will invest your money in purchasing water purification systems to give people access to clean water; digging deep wells in parts of Africa to give access to water and help communities survive in some of the most inhospitable climates in the world; build shallow wells (tube wells) in parts of Asia to give long term access to clean water around which villages and communities survive.

Example Projects so far:
  • We have built a Deep Well in Niger which is the focal point for a developing community and village, and a centre for trade and commerce in the lethal hot desert climate.
  • We are planning to initiate Tube Well scheme in Bangladesh with some local partners, which will ensure there is a clean water source in every village in some of the poorest rural communities in the country
  • We want raise £10,000 to purchase and install and maintain for one year a water purification tank in Palestine which will help 7-10,000 people survive and protect their children from death & disease every year.
